So Rich and I ended up passing on the typical Independence Day fireworks show this year, but we did manage to watch this beautiful light show from this Lake Tahoe beach. I’d say we did just fine!
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,
love leaves a memory no one can steal.

My heart aches for my friend and coworker who is hours away from the harsh reality that her son will be gone. The doctors were near miracle workers, fighting back against the tragic car accident that placed him in their care over a week ago. But it was simply too much for his body to endure, too much to recover from and so, after midnight clicks by tonight, they will let him go.
I am grateful that the doctors tried so valiantly, that they gave her and her family more time with him, even as stressful and heartbreaking as that time has been…it’s still more and more is priceless. Saying goodbye over the next few hours will not fix anything, but it is important nonetheless. He will leave this world knowing he was loved, that he mattered, that the world he is leaving behind may look the same in the morning but will never be the same for those who loved him because he is not in it. Rest in peace JN. 1974-2013
To atone for my lack of posting yesterday, I submit for you two photographs today.
The nice thing about spending the afternoon and evening at racetracks is that I often get to see some of the most beautiful sunsets. This one happened at a tiny karting track outside of Oroville, where Richard was crew chiefing (car set-up) for his good friend, David.
In 2005, we headed to a fantastic dirt track in Southern California for the annual Oval Nationals, which is a 2-3 day non-wing sprint car event in Perris. It was an exciting trip, which featured even more exciting racing. This photograph was taken moments after Richard pulled in off the track. He and the car are covered in mud and if you look closely you can still see the intensity in his eyes.
Years ago, I started a personal tradition in honor of my birthday. It could be something as small as trying a new restaurant or as big as traveling somewhere I had never been, but every year I promised myself that I would do something new. Something I had never done before. Something that would make my world a little bigger and possibly a little more interesting.
This year, in an attempt to exercise the demon known as my creativity, I am putting it all out there. Whether it is a sketch or a photograph or a piece of creative writing or just some crazy thought in my head, I intend to share it with you in this blog. Hopefully it will at the very least entertain and maybe even inspire a few of you.
So check back often, or just when you’re bored, and see what I’m up to.
